If they want their abilities to err a bit toward powerful spells with limitations, they can feel free to access the normal array of costs and restrictions stunts offer. Players can then make stunts for their magic skill just like they could with anything else. I like to treat the whole thing as not at all special, but just another set of capabilities that a character can potentially have. Then treat it exactly as I would any other skill in terms of judging whether it can do an appropriate amount of stuff, its power level, etc. My most common approach to magic in Fate games is to just have players design their character's personal magic as a totally normal skill. If I’m remembering properly, Evocation got wrapped into the Wizard character template. IME (and I think recommended in the Paranet Papers for Dresden), unless your Wizard is under pressure, you don’t bother rolling to control the power as you can trickle it in slowly enough that you won’t fail to control it - the main complexity is building the spell, but that can be fun as other PCs can help, each doing their own part to help the Wizard gather the requirements.įrom memory there’s a simpler version of thaumaturgy in Dresden Files Accelerated, but that works on the Fate Accelerated system rather than Fate Core (although they’re pretty similar). If at any stage you fail to control it, all the built up power escapes with consequences like evocation. Once you’ve done that, you gradually channel power into the ritual (using Discipline to control it) until the amount channeled equals the complexity.
You can do that through invoking aspects and also by ’creating the story of the spell’ using various skill checks and mini-scenes where you play out how you build/gather the ingredients for the ritual.
Thaumaturgy is more complicated because you have to get an effective Lore skill equal to spell complexity (difficulty) which can get high for really powerful rituals. If you fail to control the power it either inflicts stress on the caster (and takes effect), or spills out uncontrolled into the environment (and the spell has lesser effect).
